Periodontal disease

Teeth can be lost from gum (periodontal) disease as well as from decay.  This disease is very common, with 90% of adults having at least some gum irritation.  When calculus or tartar is left on the root of the teeth, the body tries to reject it like it would a splinter from the skin in your finger, by swelling.  This swelling in the gums shows up as bleeding when you brush, and should not be present.  Precious bone dissapears and teeth loosen if the problem is not corrected.
